Brief Description:
A vibrant tribute to Aztlán, imagined in Southern California’s San Pasqual River Valley. Rich green-blue nopales and deep burgundy tunas, traced in gold, evoke the abundance, prosperity, and sacred promise of a utopian homeland. A twilight sky of tangerine and rose casts a luminous glow across the valley, blending realism and abstraction to celebrate the beauty, resilience, and spiritual richness of this land.
Story / Artist Statement:
This piece was inspired by an afternoon run to the Rancho Bernardo Summit and back through the San Pasqual River Valley. The climb was physically demanding, but reaching the summit revealed a view so vast, vibrant, and alive that it felt like standing in Aztlán — a utopian land of abundance, promise, and sacred beauty.
The nopales stretch across the foreground in rich green-blue tones, while their fruit — the tunas — glow burgundy, outlined in gold to symbolize resilience, abundance, and faith. Above, a twilight sky of tangerine, rose, and indigo spills over the valley, blending warmth, calm, and reflection.
Painted in expressive strokes blending realism with abstraction, the piece captures both the physical journey and the spiritual experience of feeling immersed in a landscape that embodies the promise of God’s provision.
