The Arts, Culture and Creativity Month is a statewide initiative, which the City of Escondido joined in 2025. The city made funds available through the Public Arts Commission.
The Community Unity mural is a heartfelt collaboration between the Esco Alley Art Committee and Calvin Christian School, uniting students from kindergarten through 12th grade in a shared artistic vision.
Twelve student teams worked together to explore the theme of unity—drawing inspiration from the people, places, and values that make Escondido special. From fire trucks and farmers to local landmarks like Kit Carson Park and the Arch of Giving, each design reflected a unique piece of the community puzzle. These individual pieces were brought together into a single digitally composed artwork that celebrates connection, creativity, and kindness.
Printed on durable aluminum composite panels, the 20’ by 10’ mural resides on the alley wall of John Paul the Great Catholic University at 131 S. Broadway. The mural was unveiled on April 26, 2025, with a lively celebration attended by over 100 community members, students, and local leaders—including remarks from Mayor Dane White, who officially proclaimed April 26 as Community Unity Day in Escondido. A Certificate of Commendation for Community Artistic Excellence was also presented by Adrienne Cisneros Selekman from the office of County Supervisor Jim Desmond.
Music by the Muddy Mountain West bluegrass band and the joyful spirit of the students made the event one to remember.
This project not only transformed a wall – but sparked new ways for young people to collaborate, share ideas, and celebrate their shared identity. The mural stands as a joyful reminder that unity is possible when all voices are welcomed and celebrated.
