From the artist:

I am learning how to express my feelings. It is a daily challenge for me because of my autism. This particular art piece shares a bit about my last few months. Art and painting has provided a safe and creative way for me to speak without using many words, especially during difficult moments. Sometimes it’s like this, and art is something helpful for me.

I feel proud for the opportunities, and the personal challenge that this mural has provided me. A few times during my creative and painting process, I would stop and get my face close to the mural surface and say “hi” and “I like you.” This provided moments of gratitude, the strength to keep on even on days that were full of personal challenges, because sometimes it’s like this. I am learning it’s ok.

I’m an artist, living in Oceanside. I work mostly with acrylic paints. I started making murals a year ago in the first phase of Esco Alley Art. In my paintings I try to keep positive to counteract the constant barrage of everyday negativity. I present the fun side of life to spark the viewer’s imagination. I love doing art; it’s my life’s passion.

The main character in this painting is my version of a Maneki-neko (the “beckoning cat,” a Japanese figurine believed to bring good luck). The cat is living in the land of Catlandia, and he is also a “claw” vending machine. The standing purple cat is putting coins in the machine to free all the cats trapped inside so that they can all enjoy themselves in the San Diego-like landscape.

My painting represents something that I try to teach my daughter everyday which is to
“Be like a Flamingo, Be Balanced, Wade into Life, Stand Tall and ALWAYS STANDOUT.” On every situation she encounters through out life.

On a personal level painting this piece reminded me that no matter the situation wether is good or bad we have a choice to make the best out of it while adding a touch of color (life) to a piece that’s going to stand tall and will Always StandOut!

I hope when people look at this painting, they are reminded that color possesses a language without words and you as an individual can also be like the flamingo standing tall with full of life.

This mural is collaborative and unique. Teacher David Mackintosh made a casting call to former students from 4th or 5th grade who showed incredible talent and creativity. The students, now in high school (and one older), were directed by mural artist Spramani Elaun. The key feature of Spramani’s murals is to teach young artists how murals are conceptually created by collaboration, through phases of planning, while educating students on acrylic painting.

Foreground – Beautiful, colorful characters everywhere reflect the vast diversity of people around the world. Distinct bodies have heads of flowers from different countries, in a variety of body sizes, shapes, and skin tones. These distinctive characters represent acceptance of all.

Midground – Hands united from all over the world, inspiring love and peace. The land and hills with fountain represent a local Escondido landmark.

Background – Distant clouds with faces showing the sadness of judgement and the happiness of accepted people

Este mural es colaborativo y especial. El maestro David Mackintosh llamó a varios alumnos anteriores que tuvo en 4to o 5to grado, que habían mostrado talento y creatividad excepcional. Los alumnos, la mayoría ya en la secundaria, fueron dirigidos e instruidos por la artista y muralista Spramani Elaun. Una característica clave de sus murales es enseñarles a los niños cómo los conceptos de un mural son

creados de una manera colaborativa por medio de varias fases de planeación, y a la vez, enseñándoles acerca del uso de la pintura acrílica.

Primer plano – Hermosos y coloridos personajes a nuestro alrededor reflejan la vasta diversidad de personas alrededor del mundo. Cuerpos distintos tienen flores de países diferentes, en una variedad de tamaño, forma, y tonos de piel. Estos personajes distintos representan la aceptación de todos.

Mitad de la imagen – Las manos unidas de cada rincón del mundo inspiran el amor y la paz. La tierra y los cerros con la fuente representan el área local de Escondido.

Fondo – Las nubes distintas con caras muestran la tristeza de los que juzgan, y alegría de las personas aceptadas.

I wanted to create a piece that would embody a type of communion, something that could closely resemble the ritual of giving and receiving; the personal connection of two. My hopes for the piece is not to convey a message, but rather for people to interpret it in their most personal way.

The inspiration is from my grandchildren’s art which is simple, bold and colorful!

I usually go into a meditative state and see what comes into my mind. Initially a star came to me but then it changed into bright yellow (my grandsons favorite color); so, I walked out to the view of the hilly skyline near my house, made a quick sketch and created my piece from it showing a sun instead of a star.

I paint & create for fun and I love color so I guess the word “playful” comes to mind.

“I’m a bit of a Nomad Artist who grew up in the UK and spent a couple of years in Norway before moving to Albuquerque, San Diego, Pasadena and then settling in Seattle. Now I’ve returned to Southern California to paint and create my experiences of traveling the world and exploring other fascinating cultures. I love color and patterns and using my imagination to create my art. I use all kinds of medium but mostly acrylics and lots of intuition.”

I chose to paint this piece to speak about staying healthy, finding what makes you happy and to keep practicing kindness. The center of the mural shows two individuals hugging and showing love. What surrounds them matters and plays a role in creating a life with love. The “Somebody to love” mural is my first mural. I feel happy. I have been given an opportunity and I’ve taken on the challenges. I have learned so much along the process. I am grateful. I sometimes struggle expressing myself. My autism and severe speech delay create daily challenges, but art brings expression, hope and play into my life. I hope it brings joy to you. Somebody to love starts inside of us. I hope for good health, more play time and love to you.

My painting is about Himalayan Blue Bamboo. About 20 years ago I saw a photo of different blue plants and I was fascinated by the Himalayan Blue Bamboo and the Tibetan Blue poppy. Ever since I have always wanted to create a painting of the amazing Blue Bamboo. I have seen bamboo grow on the island of Maui up to a height of 2 or 3 stories high. I chose to paint this because Bamboo is not only beautiful, it is a very beneficial plant for the health of our planet and the Universe. Like a tree it takes carbon monoxide out of the air and produces oxygen. It is an amazing sustainable plant that is very strong and grows faster than a tree. It can be used to make durable flooring, clothing and utensils such as drinking straws and more. In Asia it is used for scaffolding during building construction.
