When trying to come up with the design for this season’s mural, I knew I wanted to do the same…to convey a message. After a few sketches and several ideas, the same thought kept coming to mind…Love and relationships. My painting process typically begins with laying down the intention for the painting, either by random marks of color, words, or scripture. This is no different. Earlier this year, while working on another piece, I wrote a poem that I incorporated into the painting I was working on. That painting ultimately found its forever home. Touched by how my poem was received, I wanted to share it with all of you. So I thought let’s incorporate the poem into the creation of the mural. The romantic in me hopes that this can be a destination painting. I hope that those who see it can be reminded of their love for one another, what brought them together, inspire new and renewed love, and maybe even be the site for proposals. But most importantly, the message I want to communicate is that we can learn, create, write new stories, and unlock the mysteries of the world Two-gether. We can exist alone, but we are so much better Two-gether.

Julia Martinez https://escoalleyart.com/julia-martinez-2022/ Wed, 12 Oct 2022 19:28:17 +0000 https://escoalleyart.com/?p=1832 This mural was influenced by Oaxacan artist Pedro Linares, who originated the Alebrijes (colorful folk art sculptures of mythical creatures). The original medium was wood. I’ve always been fascinated with the art from that region. This painting is of a hummingbird, which I consider my trademark. It’s the animal of the Aztec sun god Huitzilopochtle. He was considered the warrior of the sun, who came back as a hummingbird. I identify with his ferociousness, his ability to fly in all directions, and his resilience of spirit. I feel that this bright combination of colors will bring life to the alley.

“Julia Martinez is a Southern California artist born and raised in Riverside, now residing in San Diego. She paints in several mediums including sumi-ink, acrylic and oil. Painting is her voice as an empowered woman. Her work is often inspired by childhood memories, connections to people, guides and ancestors, spirituality and nature. She especially enjoys creating pieces that help her work through past and present challenges in life to nurture others, her soul and the universe.

“Life is a continual balancing act where light and darkness dance together.  One cannot exist without the other.  My works represent the journey deep inside to shine light on the dark parts so that they no longer dominate the light.  Fear is released through shaking hands with the dark. Wholeness is achieved by exposing and embracing all parts.””

Zane Kingcade & Stevie O’Dell https://escoalleyart.com/zane-and-stevie-odell-2022/ Wed, 12 Oct 2022 19:26:54 +0000 https://escoalleyart.com/?p=1830 This mural is called “Rolling on a Memory” created by Stevie O’Dell, a local known tattoo artist, and Zane Kingcade, a local mural artist. They are both locals and were raised in Escondido. This mural represents an iconic local skating rink called Ups and Downs that was torn down years ago. Ups and Downs was a beloved place for kids to go to on the weekends with friends or during the week with their families after doing homework. The roller rink is truly missed – it created such great memories for the community that even till this day it’s still talked about. Stevie and Zane decided to put their creative minds to the test and created something not only for themselves, but for the community as well . Cheers to the memories!! One day they hope Escondido will acquire another skating rink that will keep everyone’s memories rolling and show the community what real fun is all about!!

Xavier Dionne https://escoalleyart.com/xavier-dionne-2022/ Wed, 12 Oct 2022 19:25:29 +0000 https://escoalleyart.com/?p=1828 Old, worn and with a lot of love.

Sometimes it’s like this.

You are upside down.

Tell me a story.

From the artist:

I am learning how to express my feelings. It is a daily challenge for me because of my autism. This particular art piece shares a bit about my last few months. Art and painting has provided a safe and creative way for me to speak without using many words, especially during difficult moments. Sometimes it’s like this, and art is something helpful for me.

I feel proud for the opportunities, and the personal challenge that this mural has provided me. A few times during my creative and painting process, I would stop and get my face close to the mural surface and say “hi” and “I like you.” This provided moments of gratitude, the strength to keep on even on days that were full of personal challenges, because sometimes it’s like this. I am learning it’s ok.

Shaena Polly https://escoalleyart.com/shaena-polly-2022/ Wed, 12 Oct 2022 19:24:06 +0000 https://escoalleyart.com/?p=1824 I’m an artist, living in Oceanside. I work mostly with acrylic paints. I started making murals a year ago in the first phase of Esco Alley Art. In my paintings I try to keep positive to counteract the constant barrage of everyday negativity. I present the fun side of life to spark the viewer’s imagination. I love doing art; it’s my life’s passion.

The main character in this painting is my version of a Maneki-neko (the “beckoning cat,” a Japanese figurine believed to bring good luck). The cat is living in the land of Catlandia, and he is also a “claw” vending machine. The standing purple cat is putting coins in the machine to free all the cats trapped inside so that they can all enjoy themselves in the San Diego-like landscape.

Katie Gaines https://escoalleyart.com/katie-gains-2022/ Wed, 12 Oct 2022 19:22:43 +0000 https://escoalleyart.com/?p=1822 My participation in the very first phase of ESCO Alley Art last year was such a wonderful experience, that I was thrilled to have the opportunity to create a new piece for the 2022 season. Similar to last year’s mural, my new painting incorporates many of the themes, colors and design elements that are prevalent in my personal art. It also reflects my culture and identity as a part of the AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) community.

While the subject of the painting appears lovely and content, the piece is actually a response to what I’ve felt has been a very challenging and emotionally trying time for me personally, the last year in particular. What I’ve come to realize is that happiness is a choice. So while this painting initially came from a place of pain, ultimately, it is a reminder: that I am worthy of love and happiness; that I deserve to put my needs first; to always protect my emotional and mental well-being; to create a supported space for myself that is built upon self-confidence, self-reliance, and self-awareness; to choose joy and practice gratitude for all that I am and all that I have; and that I have the power to manifest the happiness I seek. Inspired by my favorite artist, Frida Kahlo, my mural features a self-portrait, bright colors, and dramatic symbolism. With my signature braid and overalls, (where for once I am the focus and larger than life), I am painting a flower with gold leaf. The look on my face is of determination, but the gesture is unnecessary and excessive – as shown by the extra gold dripping off the petal. My brush is capable of creating beauty, and the flower glows with the effort, but the message is simply about authenticity…that the flower is already naturally beautiful as is, no need to “gild the lily”. In my hair, rests a monarch butterfly, symbolizing transformation, strength, endurance, and hope. Each of the flowers depicted were purposefully chosen for the symbolism they represent. The white magnolia represents perseverance; the deep pink rose represents gratitude; the pink chrysanthemum is symbolic of loyalty and longevity, and is the flower for my birth month of November; the meaning of the blue morning glory is renewal and resilience, with its ability to grow and thrive in challenging situations; the hibiscus represents feminine power. Above the bold colors of the sunset sky floats a gold lotus flower design as a reminder to stay grounded, while rising above muddy waters with clarity and purpose. And finally, the Chinese characters in the middle of my mandala tattoo are “zi-xin” which means “belief in oneself”. The message I hope to convey through my painting is how important it is to practice self-care, prioritize mental health and well-being, and learn to love ourselves first. We all have the power within to create our own paradise.

SekohOne https://escoalleyart.com/sekoh/ Mon, 25 Oct 2021 02:53:55 +0000 https://escoalleyart.com/?p=1622 My painting represents something that I try to teach my daughter everyday which is to
“Be like a Flamingo, Be Balanced, Wade into Life, Stand Tall and ALWAYS STANDOUT.” On every situation she encounters through out life.

On a personal level painting this piece reminded me that no matter the situation wether is good or bad we have a choice to make the best out of it while adding a touch of color (life) to a piece that’s going to stand tall and will Always StandOut!

I hope when people look at this painting, they are reminded that color possesses a language without words and you as an individual can also be like the flamingo standing tall with full of life.

This mural is collaborative and unique. Teacher David Mackintosh made a casting call to former students from 4th or 5th grade who showed incredible talent and creativity. The students, now in high school (and one older), were directed by mural artist Spramani Elaun. The key feature of Spramani’s murals is to teach young artists how murals are conceptually created by collaboration, through phases of planning, while educating students on acrylic painting.

Foreground – Beautiful, colorful characters everywhere reflect the vast diversity of people around the world. Distinct bodies have heads of flowers from different countries, in a variety of body sizes, shapes, and skin tones. These distinctive characters represent acceptance of all.

Midground – Hands united from all over the world, inspiring love and peace. The land and hills with fountain represent a local Escondido landmark.

Background – Distant clouds with faces showing the sadness of judgement and the happiness of accepted people
