I love the process of painting. This painting involved splashing, spraying and brushing diluted pigments in order to convey the definition of joy as it appears in my head. In my head, joy takes the form of colorful, ocean sunsets. Blending my favorite colors together to create these vibrant conceptualizations of joy make my eyes smile each and every time. I am so proud to be apart of Esco Alley Art and I hope your eyes are smiling just as much as mine.

I’ve been doing art my whole life. My older sister always drew eyes, so I’ve always included eyes in my art. I’m partially color-blind, which means that I can’t see the difference between blue and purple, or between red and brown. I use spray paint and I rely on the name of the color that’s written on the can. Because of this color-blindness, I like to paint in vibrant colors. I was born and raised in San Diego, and recently I’ve been really working to get my art out.

In this painting I’ve incorporated my street art characters. I wanted to show them all together, holding hands, to show peace and unity. I love to do psychedelic, trippy artwork images. When I made this piece, the interesting thing to me will be to find out what other people see that I don’t.

I grew up in Redondo Beach, and I spent 5 years in the Navy. Then I went to school for 3D modeling and design. I loved it. I’ve always enjoyed making art and my family has always encouraged me. I still do graphic design and marketing. Recently I’ve been working in a wacky, cartoonish kind of style. My art philosophy is “Embrace the Imperfections.”

This painting represents what comes into my mind and all the things that go on in there: the stories, the ideas, the flow of imagination. I believe in challenging a lot of norms. I want people looking at the painting to wonder, “What was this guy thinking?”

This painting explores a core theme in my artwork: being yourself. Often times I find myself questioning why I do the things I love. Why would I spend time on something that gives me delayed gratification when I can scroll through Instagram? A healing process, this painting reminded me to never stop pursuing the things I love, life after all isn’t remembered through mundane memories. Further, by pursuing my passions, I’m continuing to cultivate my joy, and spread love to the people around me.

Born and raised in San Diego, I grew up around skateboard culture, graffiti art, and an urban lifestyle. I’m a tattoo artist full time and an all-around artist as well. I’m also a father and a husband: there are other humans that I support and take care of, that also take care of me. As a tattoo artist, I’m used to thinking about the living, breathing being in front of me who has feelings and opinions. But this mural is its own thing, all me.

The “E” in the middle of the painting is there to represent both Escondido and Ecstasy. For me, the painting follows a flow and pleases the eyes. It’s what my brain is thinking about in the moment, checked out of reality and invested in the piece. I block out the life around me and let my painting consume me. In this piece, I used the colors black, white, and gold: black because it is always my background, white to present a strong contrast, and gold to complement the red bricks of the alley. I wanted to make this painting something that the viewer would get sucked into, that if he were to walk away and come back, he would find something different.

I am a multidimensional artist, working in a variety of media, including painting, music composition, and creative writing. My perspective shifted towards Consciousness after a para-normal psi phenomena experience following a traumatic fall down a flgiht of stairs. My “Intelligence” mural is part of a series of paintings I created called “The Orbs.” The orbs represent a physical representation of meditative states of consciousness outside of space-time. Significant data supports the notion that Out of Body and Near-Death Experiences are commonly known to enhance consciousness and expanded awareness facilitating a move out of Beta brainwave and into Theta and Delta states as in advanced meditation. I have an undergraduate degree in musical theatre from UCSD and a Master’s degree in Dramatic Literature from Tufts University (Massachusetts). My piece is a horse and rider, a theme I have been exploring for quite a while. I am fascinated by the symbiotic relationship between animal and human. During my walks in the San Dieguito Valley, I see a lot of horseback riders. Out in the natural spaces there is a sort of timeless feeling to them. I wanted to integrate that theme in my piece. Grand Avenue had its share of horses and riders in its time. It is fun to bring back that imagery. I love prehistoric art in caves. They are the first murals depicting animals. They are the subjects of their livelihood, safety, and environment 30,000 years ago. It was the first thing they painted along with their own hands, something I equally like to portray. My fascination with horses began with my fear of them. They are so big and powerful. It was a theme my mother, who was also an artist, would paint regularly. And perhaps I pulled it out of the collective memory of these cave drawings that have been at the forefront of the psyche that got triggered during a visit to a cave of pictographs in France. I had a lot of fun painting. I haven’t worked this large before. It was exciting. My process is intuitive. I do not start with sketching. I knew I was making a horse and rider, but I did not have a particular composition in mind. Over the course of my process, a lot of layers surfaced. I would paint over and see something else. I kept digging, adding, and subtracting and something came out that was surprising to me that I didn’t know was there. The final result has sort of a dream like quality. It is good to know that it will be out there for everyone to see. It is fun to be able to give that gift without illegally painting on the wall.

My piece is about Nayarit where my parents are from. It is known for artworks that incorporate many symbols using different textiles, beads and threading found in the making of purses and garments. My family is very united. I am first generation here in the US. My parents came here to give us a better life. I want to remind them I am still proud of where they are from. It is still a part of us. Everything I do is for my parents who are Huichol, indigenous people of Mexico from the Sierra Madre Occidental range. I am a big fan of that style of art. Every time I visit, I purchase a piece to bring home with me. I have always wanted to create a painting like this to showcase my culture and I knew instantly I wanted to do something like this. I love and work with a lot of color and because Huichol art is super colorful, I can relate to it. The mural touches upon different parts of me. It is made up of two panels. The bottom panel has a Huichol girl in the center. She is wearing a garment with the symbol of a bird. There is also a deer in the Huichol style of art with all the symbols. Above the deer I put a cornfield. Agriculture is big over there. And to the right of her I bring in a little bit of the village called Pericos where my parents are from. It means parrot, thus the parrot in the mural. On top I placed the town center where everyone gathers. It is normally full of color. Right now, it is a bright pink. That is where all the celebrations take place. It is a big thing. I added a lot of different beads to emphasize the beading they do. Toward the top is a Huichol man playing a violin. The ocean and fishing have significance so that is also represented. Abundant waterfalls are also in the piece as is a church, religion playing an important role in their lives. This is my first time doing a big piece like this. I have been an artist since after high school. I took some college courses. I have painted a lot of portraits of people who have passed away. I wanted to showcase a different style of art with scenery, landscape, and symbols – super detailed. I wanted to put as much on the canvas as I can so people can see what I am able to do.

A Collaboration Project between painter Emily McMullan @practices_in_art and photographer Manny Lopez @mannysd. This piece was inspired by the photography and family lineage of San Diego based photographer, Manny Lopez. His imagery and captures of Dia de los Muertos are translated into this mural panel which unites generations of a family; those here on Earth with those who have passed. Their reunification is a celebration. It’s joy filled and loving. It’s filled with wonder and beauty. Universally, this mural panel explores the concepts of needing to be seen and loved, for who you are. My hope is that you, as the viewer of this piece, are able to feel the warmth and vibrancy come through, offering you the feeling of being both seen and loved…just as you are. My art practice is dedicated to honoring the wonder and awe within all of us. It is an honor to dedicate my work to the individuals and collective community of Escondido and beyond.
